Consuming Cervezas, tacos, burritos, salsa dancing, and parties is what most people think of when Cinco de Mayo is mentioned. Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. This is not a big holiday in Mexico but in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. Many people outside of the country of Mexico believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence. In actuality it was declared more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.
